Teacher

Image of teacherKIRSTEN KRATZ has practised Buddhist meditation in Asia and the West since 1993. She started teaching in 2006 and since 2015 she has been ‘teacher in residence’ supporting those on personal retreat at Gaia House. Her love and understanding of Dharma has been strongly influenced by, among others, the teachings of her friend and teacher colleague, Rob Burbea. One of her particular passions is exploring how wisdom teachings can foster appropriate responses to the challenges of our time, and Kirsten sees her involvement in activism as an important expression of her practice. Kirsten is co-initiator of the “Dharma Action Network for Climate Engagement” (DANCE) and supporting teacher of Freely Given Retreats.

Course description

The ‘Four Immeasurable’, ‘Brahma-Viharas’ or ‘Sublime Attitudes’ are Buddhist teachings that connect most directly with our yearning for true happiness. They hold the promise that we are all capable — no matter where we may find ourselves at times — to access and  cultivate the qualities of limitless goodwill (Metta), compassion (Karuna), joy (Mudita) and equanimity (Uppekha). Qualities or  ‘ways of looking’ fuelled by our deepening understanding that transform and liberate. By unveiling, celebrating and nourishing these attitudes we discover an increasing freedom from our conditioned and often painful ways of seeing the world and ourselves, coming more and more from a place that is informed by love, connection and wisdom

“Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”

Albert Einstein

Format and Schedule

Wednesday evenings, 7.00 pm – 8.45 pm (times shown in GMT)

During the course we give time to explore each of the liberating qualities called “Brahma Viharas”.

Please make the intention to attend all of the sessions.  Each week will build on what has been discussed and practiced in the previous sessions. However, things do change, so if you are unable to attend a session a recording will be available during the following week.

To support you in your ongoing practice Kirsten will suggest further inquiries and explorations to engage with between the sessions.

Well-being guidelines - please click here to read before booking

Before you book, please read these guidelines about mental well-being and silent retreats:

Meditation retreats can be very nourishing; however, as they require sustained meditation practice, they also need some stability of psychological health. If you have recently (within the past year or so) experienced significant trauma or psychiatric illness, or if you are currently experiencing acute emotional distress such as serious depression or anxiety, it may not be the best time for you to participate in a retreat. The teachers might not be able to give you the kind of individual psychological care you need at this time. A setting with more opportunities for interpersonal engagement may be more appropriate.

  • If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please discuss your attendance with them. You should be in a relatively stable period of mental well-being and have adequate psychological resilience.
  • If you have any questions about this, please contact Susanne using the email address, retreatmanager@gaiahouse.co.uk
