Dharma instructions and practice livestreamed from Gaia House

Saturday, 21 May – Sunday, 29 May 2022

With Ajahn Sucitto and Laura Bridgman

A precious opportunity to join teachers Ajahn Sucitto and Laura Bridgman to receive teachings twice daily amid your everyday life.

We are offering access to these livestreamed teachings on a dana basis and you are welcome to drop into any sessions that you are able to make. Please read the Format and Schedule section below for more details on this.

Teachers

AJAHN SUCITTO was born in London, England in 1949 and became a bhikkhu in Thailand in 1976. He returned to Britain in 1978 and trained under Ajahn Sumedho at Cittaviveka and Amaravati Monasteries. He was abbot of Cittaviveka 1992-2014, and he still resides there. His website www.ajahnsucitto.org has links to his free-distribution books, articles and talks as well as news of upcoming teaching engagements.

LAURA BRIDGMAN began her Dhamma practice in her early teens, and eventually ordained as a nun with Ajahn Sumedho in 1995. She was resident at Amaravati and Chithurst monasteries for eighteen years until moving out to live as a solitary nun in 2010. She has spent extended periods of time with the Burmese teacher Sayadaw U Tejaniya. In 2015 Laura left the monastic tradition to pursue the Diamond Heart (Ridhwan) spiritual path alongside her Vipassana practice. There is much over-lap as it incorporates Buddhist principles and practices.

Experience required

It was a requirement for in-house participants to have done at least two residential week-long silent Vipassana/Insight Meditation retreats along with 5 years of regular practice. These requirements can be relaxed for those enjoying the livestream offering but please be aware that the teachings will be tailored towards experienced practitioners.

Retreat description

The five indriya – trust/faith, energy, mindfulness, collectedness and discernment – are considered to be faculties that lead the mind into awakening. They are said to ‘merge in the Deathless.’ In this retreat we will use practices of stabilising and nourishing the heart to support inquiry into the arousing and interplay of these faculties.

Format and Schedule

(times shown in British Summer Time)

There will be two livestreamed sessions consisting of Dharma instructions and practice:

  • 9.00am for 1 hour
  • 2.45pm for 1 hour

The precise timings will be communicated shortly but will not vary significantly from above. However, the final day will vary and will consist of a morning session only.

You are welcome to join any sessions when you are able. Outside of the scheduled times, and if personal circumstances allow, some livestream participants might like to spend further time in silence or in other forms of practice, but there is no expectation for you to do so as the live-stream is not being offered as a full, home-retreat experience.

Also, please note that there will not be any support structures in place for livestream participants, such as 1-2-1s and group meetings.

The sessions are likely to become more practice and less instruction-oriented as the in-house retreat unfolds. This is particularly important to note for those who can only join sessions later in the programme, when the teachers will spend less time discussing and contextualising the practice.

We hope you will be able to attend the sessions live but, if circumstances do not allow this, the sessions will be recorded and made available on the online noticeboard.

Although all efforts have been made to ensure that livestreaming is possible from Gaia House, we are in a rural location and at times there can be a loss of connectivity.  If this is the case, there is the possiblity that a full recording of that session will not be available.

Late registration for access to audio and video recordings

Registration will remain open until 31 May and so it will be possible to register after the retreat has concluded to access recordings of the teachings via the noticeboard. The noticeboard will remain open until 30 June 2022 and you will be able to enjoy the content on-demand until that date.

Using Zoom

This online retreat will use the Zoom platform. For support with learning how to use Zoom, please click here to read the guidance we’ve put together on our website. Please read the first section, ‘Using Zoom’, before registering.

Dana/generosity

This is a unique opportunity for those who cannot attend in person to enjoy the live teachings from this keynote retreat. The livestream access is being offered on a dana basis in recognition of the varying ways that livestream participants may interact with the schedule, and in accordance with the Buddhist tradition of freely offering priceless teachings.

Gaia House teachers rely on the generosity of students for their livelihood. There will be an opportunity to make a dana offering to Ajahn Sucitto and Laura, as well as to the residential service team and Gaia House’s General and FAB Funds.

Your generosity is vital in supporting Gaia House to sustain its Dharma offerings for the benefit of all.

Participants are invited to offer contributions in accordance with their means.

We are deeply grateful for your generosity.

Well-being guidelines - please click here to read before booking

Before you book, please read these guidelines about mental well-being and silent retreats:

Meditation retreats can be very nourishing; however, as they require sustained meditation practice, they also need some stability of psychological health. If you have recently (within the past year or so) experienced significant trauma or psychiatric illness, or if you are currently experiencing acute emotional distress such as serious depression or anxiety, it may not be the best time for you to participate in a retreat. The teachers might not be able to give you the kind of individual psychological care you need at this time. A setting with more opportunities for interpersonal engagement may be more appropriate.

  • If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please discuss your attendance with them. You should be in a relatively stable period of mental well-being and have adequate psychological resilience.
  • If you have any questions about this, please contact Susanne using the email address, retreatmanager@gaiahouse.co.uk
