Awakening in the Thick of It – Evening Session

Online practice period

With Gavin Milne

Thursday, 25 March 2021, 7.30 pm – 9.30 pm

This is part of a series of events around the theme “Awakening in the Thick of it”. Events can be attended individually, or as a whole series.

This retreat is open to all, including beginners and those with experience. Please join us.

Whatever being ‘in the thick of it’ means to you, perhaps you are a parent, or a student; perhaps you are a juggler of household duties, or have a busy working life; perhaps you are dealing with the consequences of the pandemic we are in. All are welcome to practice in the thick of it.

This evening

During this practice evening, rather than focussing on a particular Dharma teaching, we will allow our own lives and experience to be our guide, illuminating what stands in the way of us meeting our unfolding circumstances with awareness and curiosity. We will spend some time in formal meditation, sharing and exploring the teachings, as well as inquiring into our experience. There will also be the opportunity to practice relational inquiry in small groups.

Retreat series description

Most of us lead active and engaged lives, and whilst aspiring for calm, balanced and relaxed hearts and minds, the reality can prove quite different. Especially during turbulent times such as these. Many of the situations and circumstances we find ourselves in, can easily become inconveniences to deeper aspirations for freedom and purpose – further disconnecting us from life unfolding in the now, precisely where such things are to be discovered. So what if they needn’t be inconveniences? What if they provide the ‘rub’ towards an integrated and embodied awakening for our times? These are questions worth exploring.

Well-being guidelines - please click here to read before booking

Before you book, please read these guidelines about mental well-being and silent retreats:

Meditation retreats can be very nourishing; however, as they require sustained meditation practice, they also need some stability of psychological health. If you have recently (within the past year or so) experienced significant trauma or psychiatric illness, or if you are currently experiencing acute emotional distress such as serious depression or anxiety, it may not be the best time for you to participate in a retreat. The teachers might not be able to give you the kind of individual psychological care you need at this time. A setting with more opportunities for interpersonal engagement may be more appropriate.

  • If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please discuss your attendance with them. You should be in a relatively stable period of mental well-being and have adequate psychological resilience.
  • If you have any questions about this, please contact Susanne using the email address, retreatmanager@gaiahouse.co.uk
