Young Persons’ Retreat (ages 16-25 years)

Young Persons’ Retreat (ages 16-25 years)

Buddhist meditation is often described as a pathway to cultivate wisdom and compassion. On this retreat we will explore our potential to bring wise and compassionate responses to each moment in our lives.

Through sitting and walking meditation, we will learn ways to respond creatively and with increasing wisdom to the obstacles and habits that appear to obscure these qualities. Our exploration will be supported by meditation instructions, Dharma talks and meetings with the teachers.

This retreat is open to all young people aged 16 to 25 years.

Meredith, who attended the retreat in 2016, said: "The Young Persons Retreat is a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn about and practise meditation in a retreat setting at a very accessible rate. I have recommended the retreat to countless friends and family members. The balance of teaching with self-exploration and reflection is perfect, and is appropriate whether you are new to meditation or already have experience of the practice. I'm very clear that it's one of the most productive and beneficial things to do with a weekend!"

Jordan, who participated in the retreat in 2015, said: “The Young Persons Retreat at Gaia House gave me an insight into meditation, and was an opportunity to develop my understanding of the practice together with like-minded people. I believe that the retreat has had a lasting benefit in terms of my ability to deal with stressful situations, and I feel I have increased confidence now."

Before you book, please read these guidelines regarding mental well-being and silent retreats

Intensive silent meditation retreats can be very nourishing; however, as they require sustained meditation practice, they also need some stability of psychological health. If you have recently (i.e. within the past year or so) experienced significant trauma or psychiatric illness, or if you are currently experiencing acute emotional distress such as serious depression or anxiety, it may not be the best time for you to attend an intensive retreat in silence. The teachers might not be able to give you the kind of individual or psychological care you might need at this time. It could possibly be more appropriate to practise in or seek out a setting where there are more opportunities for interpersonal engagement.

  • If you are currently under the care of a mental health professional, please discuss your attendance with them. You should be in a relatively stable period of mental well-being and have adequate psychological resilience to attend an intensive silent retreat.
  • Please be prepared to offer your mental health professional's contact information to the teachers on opening day if requested.
  • If you have any questions about the above please contact:
