Investigating Koans

Investigating Koans

The Chinese Chan (Zen) practice of investigating Huatou and Gongan (Koans) will be practised in periods of sitting meditation interspersed by walking meditation and stretching exercises.

As one becomes deeply absorbed in the practice mental constructions drop away, and one is confronted by a realisation that one does not know the nature of existence and one's fundamental assumptions of life are groundless. Staying with and cultivating this 'doubt', it can become all-consuming 'Great Doubt' which may 'shatter' into a direct insight into reality, a glimpse of Enlightenment.

This retreat is recommended particularly for those with previous experience of intensive retreat but serious beginners are also accepted.

-Camping places-
A limited number of camping places are available for this retreat at a reduced rate. It is not possible to book these online. Please contact our Reception team to enquire. Please note that we can only accommodate small one/two-person tents and each retreatant must have their own tent.
